7 Strategies to Pass on the Faith to Your Grandchildren
You Want Your Grandchildren to Remain Faithful to Christ
The world has changed a lot since we were young. Our post-Christian culture seeks to undermine our grandchildren’s faith in God and the Church, leaving grandparents feeling confused about how to effectively help pass the faith on to them.
New times demand a new approach. And new strategies.
The following Legacy of Faith strategies are key components to your overall plan.
1. Prayer
Regularly practice these prayers: shared prayers with your grandchild, intercessory prayers for your grandchild and blessing prayers over your grandchild.
2. Formation
Share a Catholic worldview with your grandchildren. Explain what Catholics believe and why. Clearly communicate your family’s values and model the behaviors you want your grandchildren to imitate.
3. Communication
Discuss Biblical and saint stories to teach lessons in heroic virtue. Share chapters from your own life and those of living and deceased relatives that highlight core family values.
4. Faith Rhythms
Incorporate into your family life religious traditions — such as the sacraments and feast days — as well as religious and secular rituals. Celebrate rites of passages that mark the stages in your grandchildren’s growth. Introduce them to works of mercy, such as community service.
5. Activities
Engage in one-on-one time with each grandchild and participate in family events, including holiday meals, sporting events, theater performances and recitals.
6. Gifting
Gift ideas include sacramentals, such as a Bible or Rosary, items that support their hobbies and financial assets, where possible.
7. Suffering
Offer up your physical, emotional and spiritual suffering for your family, especially grandchildren who have left the faith.
